Today’s announcement by the Government allowing extensions and conservatories to be built without planning permission will almost certainly accelerate complaints between neighbours as homeowners build extensions and conservatories.
Allowing unchecked extensions could detract from the value of neighbour’s property if it’s of a low standard, ugly or not in keeping with the existing property.
Jonathan Haward, chairman of County Homesearch, commented: “Homeowners planning to take advantage of the planning-free window might like to consider that low standard work may detract from their property and also from their neighbours. Using an architect is always a good idea.
“Past research by County Homesearch has shown that improvements to kitchens and bathrooms usually add value to a home. Conservatories need further consideration. They can leak and are very expensive to heat in winter and may not fit in with the aesthetics of a period property,” added Jonathan Haward.
